Why You Should Self-Custody Your Bitcoin

If you leave bitcoin on an exchange, you are essentially just a customer of that exchange. The bitcoin is in their name, in their wallet, under their control. Only when you give the order to withdraw and that withdrawal actually arrives in your own wallet are you the owner.

That sounds abstract until something goes wrong. An exchange going bankrupt, a country imposing a payment freeze, a hack where customer funds disappear, a judge freezing accounts. It has all happened more often than people think. The phrase “not your keys, not your coins” didn't come out of nowhere.

Bitcoin is designed to operate without an intermediary. Self-custody, the practice of holding your own keys, is not an optional extra but the network's default assumption. hardware wallet it's the tool that allows you to put that standard into practice without having to become a computer expert.

This guide explains how to do that. Not with the promise that it's all easy, because self-custody requires some responsibility. But with the promise that it's manageable, even if you've never touched a hardware wallet before.

2. Which hardware wallet is right for you

A hardware wallet is a small device that stores your private keys offline and signs transactions without the keys ever touching your phone or computer. That's the whole trick. Even if your laptop is infected with malware, your sats remain safe as long as you check the transaction on the wallet's screen before confirming.

BitcoinStuffStore carries three hardware wallets that we have tested and dare to recommend to customers. They suit different profiles.

BitBox02 Bitcoin-only

Made by Shift Crypto in Switzerland. The Bitcoin-only version has exclusively Bitcoin firmware, with no support for other coins. This keeps the device's attack surface small and the codebase manageable.

For whom: Beginners who are looking for a wallet that “just works” and advanced users who value a clean, open-source codebase.

What we think of it: You connect it via USB-C, open the BitBoxApp, and within ten minutes you have a working wallet. The screen is small but legible. The touch controls at the top and bottom take some getting used to but work fine. No Bluetooth, no battery, no complicated menus.

Disadvantages to be honest: The screen is really small. For people with poorer eyesight, that might make operating it more difficult. And the touch sensors are slightly less direct than physical buttons.

BitBox02 Bitcoin-only review

Blockstream Jade Plus

An affordable alternative from Blockstream itself, the company behind Liquid, the Green wallet, and more. The Plus version has a larger color screen and a faster processor than the original.

For whom: people with a more limited budget who don't want to compromise on privacy and multi-sig support. And for people who want to be able to sign on the go via an air-gapped QR flow or Bluetooth.

What we think of it: Hard to beat for the price-quality ratio. Strong privacy features, multi-sig support from day one, and compatible with many software wallets like Sparrow, Specter, and their own Green app.

Disadvantages to be honest: Bluetooth is an attack surface. We recommend disabling it unless you really need it. And the plastic casing feels less premium than a BitBox02 or Coldcard.

View Blockstream Jade Plus

Coldcard Q

The serious, professional wallet from Coinkite in Canada. Bitcoin-only, with physical keys, a large screen, NFC, dual-chip security, and a QR scanner. For power users running multi-sig setups or wanting a truly sovereign setup.

For whom: Bitcoiners with larger holdings, people who want to take multi-sig seriously, and anyone who wants maximum control.

What we think of it: This is not a Sunday afternoon wallet. The Coldcard Q requires more reading to understand all the features, but those who take the effort will have the most robust setup you can get for a consumer budget. The QR scanner makes air-gapped signing practical rather than cumbersome.

Disadvantages to be honest: Highest price of the three. Steep learning curve. And it's a larger device, so less discreet to carry around.

View Coldcard Q

Which one do you choose?

Do you want a single wallet, set up and put away? BitBox02 Bitcoin-only.

Low budget, or signing a lot on the go? Blockstream Jade Plus.

Multi-sig, large amounts, or do you really want to do it right? Coldcard Q.

When in doubt: BitBox02. You can always buy a second wallet later for multi-sig without rendering your first wallet useless.

All hardware wallets in the store

3. Your seed phrase: the most important piece of paper you'll ever get

When you set up a hardware wallet, it generates a seed phrase. Twelve or twenty-four words in a fixed order. Those words are a mathematical representation of your private key. Whoever has the seed phrase has the bitcoin. Period.

This means two things at once:

If you lose your seed phrase, you will no longer be able to access your bitcoin if your wallet is lost or broken.

If someone else gets their hands on the seed phrase, they can steal all your bitcoin without you being able to prevent it.

Both scenarios are final. No password resets, no customer service, no insurance.

What you're doing

Write down the seed phrase with a pen on paper. The manufacturer's included card is fine to start with.

Do this at a quiet moment, without your phone nearby, without cameras, not near a window.

Check every word. Many people misspell a letter or skip a word. One mistake and you'll never recover.

Store the seed phrase in a fireproof and waterproof location. A safe, a metal safe-box, or for extra security, a metal backup.

What you never do

Taking a photo of the seed phrase with your phone. That photo will be in your cloud backup within seconds.

Typing your seed phrase into a note app, email, WhatsApp, or anywhere in digital form.

Read the seed phrase out loud to someone. Do not read it to someone from a wallet's “customer service,” because that doesn't exist and they will never ask you for your seed.

Keeping all your seed phrase words in one place along with the hardware wallet itself. One break-in, everything is gone.

Metal backup

Paper burns, yellows, gets lost. For those who take their setup seriously, a metal seed phrase backup is the next step. BitcoinStuffStore sells the Seedfan Steel Kit for this purposestainless steel plates in which you stamp the first four letters of each word. Resistant to fire, water, and most forms of bad luck.

A metal backup doesn't replace paper immediately, it complements it. Start with paper, and once you know your setup is correct, hammer it into metal.

Test your restore

This is the step that nine out of ten people skip and regret.

Reset your hardware wallet (full wipe, factory reset) and restore it from your seed phrase. Do this before loading significant amounts onto it. If the restore works, you'll know your backup is sound. If it doesn't work, you'll find out now, not five years from now when your hardware wallet has broken.

Where your seed phrase comes from also matters

This chapter is about storing your seed phrase. There is a step that precedes it and weighs just as heavily: how those words were created.

In July 2026, it was discovered that, due to a firmware bug, Coldcard had been generating seeds for years with less randomness than intended. As a result, bitcoin was compromised on older models. Anyone who had generated their seed using dice was unaffected, because that randomness came from the user and not from the device.

Two lessons you can apply immediately. When creating a new seed, throw at least 50 of your own dice if your device has that option. And make sure you are not completely dependent on a single manufacturer, for example with a strong passphrase or a multisig setup.

Find out exactly what happened and what you should do if you have a Coldcard

4. Cold storage versus daily use

Not all your bitcoin belongs in the same place. A well-thought-out setup distributes your sats across two types of storage.

Cold storage is your savings account. Large amounts, hardware wallet that you rarely touch, seed phrase safely stored, possibly multi-sig. You only do something with it if you're actually going to do something: buy, sell, move to another wallet.

Hot wallet is your wallet. Small amounts for daily use, Lightning for fast, small payments, a mobile wallet on your phone. If you lose your phone it's annoying but not a disaster.

How much is true?

A reasonable rule of thumb: if you wouldn't accept losing the amount on your phone wallet, it doesn't belong there. For most people, that's a few hundred euros worth of sats, no more. Anything above that amount belongs in cold storage.

Lightning for small payments

Lightning is a second-layer network on Bitcoin that enables fast, cheap micropayments. Good self-custody mobile Lightning wallets are Phoenix and Aqua. Both store your keys on your own phone, not on someone else's server. Open the wallet, deposit a small amount, and you'll have Lightning ready without taking on major risks.

When to transfer

Periodically move the sats you have left from hot to cold. Monthly, quarterly, or whenever your hot wallet exceeds a self-set limit. Make it a habit, otherwise it won't happen.

5. Five mistakes new self-custody Bitcoiners make

Error 1: Seed phrase on the phone

A photo, a note app, a password manager. It seems convenient, it's a time bomb. Phones get hacked, stolen, broken, and cloud backups happily sync everything along. Your seed phrase should never, in any way, exist in digital form.

Error 2: Do not perform test restore

People think the seed phrase they just wrote down is correct. Until they need to use it and find a word is missing or out of order. Do a test restore before transferring serious amounts. It takes half an hour and can save you everything.

Error 3: passphrase not understood

Many wallets support a passphrase: an extra password on top of your seed phrase that creates a separate, hidden wallet. Powerful, but also dangerous. If you use a passphrase and forget it, you'll lose everything. The seed phrase alone won't lead you to the Bitcoin behind the passphrase.

Start without a passphrase. Learn how your wallet works, learn how restore works, and then decide if a passphrase fits your setup.

Error 4: Leaving everything on an exchange

The easiest mistake. You buy sats on an exchange, think “I'll transfer it tomorrow,” and tomorrow becomes the day after tomorrow, which becomes next year. Until the exchange collapses or your account is frozen.

Set yourself a threshold: as soon as the amount goes above, say, five hundred euros, it goes to your hardware wallet. No exceptions.

Error 5: No plan for heirs

If something happens to you, and you haven't left instructions, your sats are lost forever. No one can claim them, no one can recover them.

Create a document (on paper, not digital) that explains where your seed phrase is located, how your hardware wallet works, and who should do what. Discuss it with your partner or a trusted person. It doesn't have to be complicated, it just needs to exist.

6. Checklist for your first storage setup

Hardware wallet ordered and received in original, undamaged packaging

On a quiet moment, I took out the wallet, without a phone or camera nearby

Seed phrase generated on the wallet itself (never anywhere else)

Seed phrase written down on paper, word for word checked

Seed phrase stored in a safe place (safe, fireproof, not with the wallet)

First small amount (e.g., 5000 sats) transferred to the wallet and confirmed

Test restore performed: wallet wiped, restored from seed phrase, sats still visible

Software wallet (BitBoxApp, Sparrow, Specter of Green) installed and paired

Backup location of the seed phrase written down in a second, separate place

Possibly Metal seed phrase backup ordered and stamped

Possibly: passphrase strategy devised, tested, and documented

Heir's plan put on paper and stored in a findable place

Larger amounts transferred to your new cold storage

Date noted for testing your restore in six months

7. Finally

Self-custody is not an achievement, it's a habit. The first time feels uncomfortable. After a few weeks, it's routine. After a few months, you'll wonder why you ever did it differently.

At BitcoinStuffStore, we believe it's important that you understand what you're buying and why. If you have questions about a specific wallet, a passphrase setup, or how to set up multi-sig, feel free to email us.
