The city has been building a local bitcoin economy since 2014, which makes it the longest-running one in the world. Dozens of shops, caf\u00e9s and entrepreneurs still accept bitcoin there. In this post I put both conferences side by side, tell you which one suits you and what goes in your bag.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which bitcoin conferences take place in Arnhem?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two bitcoin-only conferences are scheduled in Arnhem: the Noderunners Conference on 19 September 2026 and Adopting Bitcoin Arnhem on 28 and 29 May 2027. You see that mindset in the programme. The main stage covers privacy, self-custody, European regulation, mining, Nostr and what happens to your bitcoin when you are no longer around. Speakers include Bert de Groot, Jos Lazet, Bram Kanstein, Sjors Provoost, Kim de Vos and WantClue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshops are the reason to come early. There is a session on setting up a multisig wallet, a Nostr training, a workshop on Bitcoin Core and Stratum v2, a SeedSigner session and a Meshtastic workshop on communicating without the internet. These are not spectator sessions: bring your own gear and get to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside the rooms you will find a Bitcoin Art Museum with a live auction around 16:30, an arcade with Lightning games where you win or lose sats, hardware demos and an open area where bitcoin projects and communities present themselves. Food and drinks come from De Spitterij and the BitcoinTaps bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day itself is not the whole story. On Friday 18 September there is a Freedom Run and Walk at 16:00 and a BitDevs meetup for builders at 19:00. After the conference on Saturday there is an afterparty in Arnhem. The full programme is at <a href=\"https:\/\/noderunners.network\/en\/conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noderunners.network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Adopting Bitcoin Arnhem 2027?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adopting Bitcoin Arnhem is a two-day conference on 28 and 29 May 2027 about bitcoin as a means of payment, part of the international Adopting Bitcoin series that previously landed in El Salvador and Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where Noderunners is about the technology under the hood, Adopting Bitcoin is about the road there: how does bitcoin become money people actually spend? Arnhem is the logical place for that. The first Arnhem edition in 2024 brought together speakers such as Peter Todd, Sjors Provoost, Anita Posch, Giacomo Zucco, Aaron van Wirdum and Arnold Hubach of Bitcoin Focus, with topics ranging from Bitcoin development and Lightning to human rights and local bitcoin economies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme and speakers for 2027 are not known yet. The call for papers is open, side events will follow. What is certain: early-bird tickets cost 99 euros until 22 September 2026 and you can only pay in bitcoin. If you want to join the conversation, there is a Signal and a Telegram group run by the organisers.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which bitcoin conference in Arnhem suits you?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go to Noderunners if you want to build, mine and manage things yourself, and to Adopting Bitcoin if you want to see how bitcoin works as money in shops, businesses and countries.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>You run a node or a miner, or want to start.<\/strong> Noderunners. The workshops on Bitcoin Core, Stratum v2 and SeedSigner are exactly your world. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoinstuffstore.com\/en_us\/productcategory\/solo-miners\/\">Bitaxe or NerdQaxe<\/a> in your bag is a great conversation starter at the hardware demos.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You have just started and want to meet the people behind bitcoin in the Netherlands.<\/strong> Both. Noderunners is more intense and more technical, Adopting Bitcoin broader and more international. If in doubt, start with the day in September: one day, one ticket, and you will know right away whether this is your thing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You are an entrepreneur and considering accepting bitcoin.<\/strong> Adopting Bitcoin. The whole conference revolves around exactly that question, and Arnhem is the city where you can see the answer in practice. Afterwards, walk past the shops that have been accepting bitcoin for years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You come for the atmosphere, the art and the people.<\/strong> Noderunners has the Art Museum, the arcade and the afterparty. Adopting Bitcoin has two days to talk to everyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you bring to a bitcoin conference?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bring a Lightning wallet with sats, your hardware wallet for the workshops and a power bank. Beyond that: curiosity.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A Lightning wallet with sats on it.<\/strong> At Noderunners you pay for your ticket, your parking, your coffee and the arcade with Lightning. Without a working wallet you are empty-handed. Load up a few hundred thousand sats in advance. Exactly the themes of Adopting Bitcoin.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is Arnhem the bitcoin city of the Netherlands?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arnhem has had a continuous local bitcoin economy since 2014, with dozens of entrepreneurs accepting bitcoin, which makes it the longest-running in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It started in 2014 with a handful of shops and the Arnhem Bitcoinstad initiative. Twelve years later it is no longer an experiment but a habit: in Arnhem you can pay for a beer, a haircut and lunch in bitcoin without anyone batting an eye. That combination of practice and community makes the city the obvious home for both conferences. Search for bitcoin conference Arnhem and you get not one but two answers.
