Not on paper. The Cryptosteel Seed12 Security Kit sets your twelve words in stainless steel, in a capsule that you seal. No electronics, no battery, nothing that can break.

Specifications

Suitable forrecovery phrase of 12 words (BIP39), in the standard four-letter notation

Capacityup to 64 characters

Letter tilesover 310 double-sided tiles, A to Z

Materialstainless steel, housing AISI 303, tiles AISI 304, core AISI 310

Resistant tofire, water, corrosion and more than 12 tons of pressure

Content: backup-kern, capsule and sealing module with three seals and wire

Dimensions95 x 66 x 18 mm

Weight171 gram

Works withevery wallet that uses BIP39

How it works

You slide four letter tiles onto the core per word, in the order of your recovery sentence. Four letters are enough: in the BIP39 wordlist, every word can be recognized by its first four letters. The core goes into the steel capsule, the capsule is closed, and you put a wire seal through it.

Nothing is stamped and nothing is engraved. You don't need a hammer and you can update your backup later, for example if you switch to a new wallet. If you want to know how to handle this smartly first, read how to store your seed phrase in a steel backup.

Note: twelve words, not 24

The Seed12 is made for a twelve-word recovery phrase. The capsule holds up to 64 characters, which is exactly twelve four-letter words. If you have a 24-word recovery phrase, it will not fit and you will need the Seed24.

Not sure how many words you have? Check your backup card or your wallet. Most modern wallets, including the Blockstream Jade and the Trezor Safe, provide you with twelve words by default. For more information, see the guide to safely storing your seed phrase.

The seal is the point

Metal protects your words against fire and water. The seal protects them against people. You cannot open a wire seal without leaving a trace: you can see at a glance whether someone has tampered with your backup. There are three in the box, and You can order loose seals at when you need them.

Buy your backup right away from hardware wallet. The day you need it is the wrong day to have to order one. Check it out hardware wallets lineup.

Frequently asked questions about the Cryptosteel Seed12 Security Kit

Does a 24-word recovery phrase fit in the Seed12?

No. The Seed12 has room for 64 characters, enough for twelve four-letter words. For a 24-word recovery phrase, you need the Seed24, which can hold up to 128 characters.

Why are four letters per word sufficient?

The BIP39 wordlist is designed so that each word is unique by its first four letters. With those four letters, every wallet restores your recovery phrase without errors. That is the standard method for metal backups.

Will the Seed12 work with my hardware wallet?

Yes, with any wallet that uses the BIP39 standard. That includes virtually all well-known hardware wallets, such as Blockstream Jade, Trezor, BitBox, and Foundation Passport.

Should I stamp or engrave letters?

No. You slide ready-made steel letter tiles onto a core. You don't need any tools and you can adjust your backup later if necessary.

What are the seals for?

With a seal and wire, you close the capsule in such a way that it cannot be opened without notice. This lets you see immediately if anyone has tampered with your backup. There are three seals included in the kit, and individual seals can be ordered separately.

Metal backup for your 12-word recovery phrase.
