Layered Money by Nik Bhatia

Layered Money is the Dutch translation of “Layered Money” (2021) by Nik Bhatia, a former bond trader at Goldman Sachs and now a university professor of finance. The book introduces a powerful mental framework: money always exists in layers, with the most reliable form of money at the bottom as a foundation and less reliable forms stacked above it.

This book costs €16,98 and is available as a paperback via BitcoinStuffStore.

The concept of money layers: layered money

Bhatia’s central insight is simple yet powerful. Take the current monetary system. Gold was long the first layer: the most reliable money, postponed by no one, difficult to counterfeit. The second layer consisted of gold certificates and later dollar bills: paper representing a claim on gold. The third layer consists of bank deposits: a claim on dollars which are themselves already a claim. Each layer carries more counterparty risk.

Bitcoin fits into this framework as a new first layer. Like gold, it is not issued by a counterparty, is not dependent on a central bank, and has a fixed maximum supply. The Lightning Network then forms the second layer: a payment layer on top of Bitcoin that enables fast, low-cost transactions.

Content and structure

Bhatia begins historically. He discusses the rise of exchange banks in seventeenth-century Amsterdam and Hamburg, which for the first time introduced the principle of layers into the monetary system. Bankers issued certificates that circulated more widely than the gold reserves upon which they theoretically rested. That was the birth of fractional-reserve banking.

From there, Bhatia draws the line to the modern system. The Federal Reserve is the layer-1 institution in the current dollar regime: banks hold reserves at the Fed, not physical dollars. Commercial banks operate on layer 2, with balances that are claims on those reserves. Consumers and businesses operate on layer 3.

The most interesting part of the book is the analysis of the post-1971 period. After the decoupling from gold, the dollar lost its external anchor. The first layer became a political decision instead of a physical limitation. Bhatia shows how this has undermined the stability of the entire system.

The final section covers Bitcoin and Lightning. Bhatia is technically knowledgeable enough to discuss the Lightning Network in depth, but he writes for a financial audience that prefers to understand it in terms of monetary theory. That is what makes *Layered Money* unique: it is the only book that analyzes Bitcoin primarily as a monetary layer, rather than as an investment or technology.

The translation is well-crafted. Technical financial terms are explained where necessary, so that readers without a background in bonds or central banking can also follow.

Reading experience

I read *Layered Money* on the recommendation of someone who said, “If you’re going to read just one Bitcoin book for someone in the financial sector, let it be this one.” That recommendation is spot on. Bhatia writes from his own experience as a bond trader. He understands how people in the financial world think and speaks their language.

What struck me is how Bhatia manages to discuss Bitcoin without the usual enthusiastic tone that puts many people off. It is an analytical book. The arguments are built on monetary theory, not on price expectations. That is precisely why it makes an effective gift for skeptics.

The book is relatively short (less than two hundred pages) but contains few superfluous words. Each chapter adds something to the layered model.

Who is this book for?

"Layered Money" is the ideal book for people with a background in finance, economics, or banking who do not yet take Bitcoin seriously. Bhatia’s language is their language. It is also valuable for anyone who wants to better understand the monetary system before placing Bitcoin within that context.

It's not the best choice as a first Bitcoin book for absolute beginners. In that case, read this one first The Little Bitcoin Book. But if you already know what Bitcoin is and want to understand how it fits into the broader monetary architecture, *Layered Money* is indispensable.
