The Genesis Book by Aaron van Wirdum

The Book of Genesis is the most comprehensive Dutch-language chronicle of how Bitcoin came into being. Aaron van Wirdum, a longtime editor at Bitcoin Magazine, reconstructs the intellectual and technical lineage of Bitcoin: from the early cypherpunk movements and cryptographic experiments to the moment when Satoshi Nakamoto published the white paper in 2008 and activated the network in 2009.

Content and structure: the Book of Genesis

Van Wirdum does not start with Satoshi. He begins decades earlier, with the cypherpunk mailing list and the people who believed that cryptography could be a political tool. Names like David Chaum, Wei Dai, Nick Szabo, and Hal Finney are reviewed, not as footnotes but as full-fledged main characters. Each of them contributed something to the idea of digital money, and Van Wirdum shows precisely which building block was supplied by whom.

The book is structured chronologically but never loses sight of its technical thread. Van Wirdum explains why earlier attempts at digital currency failed: the problem of double-spending, reliance on trusted parties, and vulnerability to censorship. Bitcoin solved all these problems, and *The Book of Genesis* shows how those solutions were intellectually laid out by a small group of engineers and libertarian thinkers.

The central part of the book covers the period 2008-2011: the whitepaper, the first blocks, the early Bitcoin forums, the correspondence between Satoshi and early collaborators like Hal Finney and Martti Malmi. Van Wirdum had access to primary sources: emails, forum posts, and IRC logs that make the atmosphere of that early period palpable.

The chapter on the block size debate and the first signs of governance discussions is particularly valuable. Bitcoin was still small, but the fundamental questions about who makes decisions in a decentralized network arose early on.

The concluding chapter places the origins of Bitcoin in a broader perspective: why was 2008 the right time? What made the financial crisis the perfect context for a new monetary system? Van Wirdum answers these questions without resorting to hype.

Reading experience

I read *The Book of Genesis* expecting that I already knew the basics. That expectation turned out to be wrong. Van Wirdum delves deeper than the standard stories about Satoshi and Bitcoin. Particularly noteworthy are the chapters on the precursors: Wei Dai’s B-money and Nick Szabo’s Bitgold. Although these were never launched, the ideas they contain can be found directly in the Bitcoin white paper.

The writing style is journalistic in the best sense of the word: factual, well-documented, without passing judgment on the people he describes. Van Wirdum lets the facts speak for themselves. That makes the book credible and readable at the same time.

The book is available exclusively in Dutch. That is remarkable for a work of this level, but also logical: Van Wirdum is one of the few Dutch authors who possesses the technical and historical depth to tell this story.
