Bitaxe Install

Tutorial: install Bitaxe and start mining

Want to get started with the Bitaxe? In this guide, we explain step by step how to install, configure and get your Bitaxe ready to mine independently. This guide is based on the most up-to-date information and our own user experience. With it, we'll get you off to the best possible start with your own open-source Bitcoin miner.

🛠 What is the Bitaxe Gamma?

The Bitaxe Gamma is a compact, open-source Bitcoin ASIC miner designed for education, experimentation and decentralized mining. It is the way to get your own mining experience without spending thousands of dollars right away. The Bitaxe runs on an ESP32 controller and contains an original Bitmain BM1397 or BM1398 ASIC chip (depending on model).

🌍 Why buy Bitaxe?

By purchasing a Bitaxe, you directly contribute to the global open-source movement within Bitcoin mining. For every Bitaxe sold, $5 goes to the community for further development. So you not only support the freedom of the Bitcoin network, but also the innovation of this wonderful technology.

So you don't just get a gadget, but become part of a global movement of free, sovereign builders.

🔧 Install Bitaxe

Step 1: Assemble hardware

The Bitaxe is delivered mostly already assembled, but it is useful to check that everything is in place yourself:

  1. Connect the antenna to the ESP32.
  2. Attach the fan if supplied separately.
  3. Place the OLED screen on the connector provided.
  4. Place everything on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

Step 2: Connecting the power supply

⚡ Power advice: Always use the Original Charger

For reliable operation of your Bitaxe, a stable and quality nutrition essential. Therefore, use always the original charger that we recommend or include with the Bitaxe.

🔌 Note at: Using an alternative or unsuitable power supply may result in overheating, instability or even permanent damage to the device. In the past, a customer connected another power supply himself, resulting in the device malfunctioning - and therefore the warranty expired. That, of course, is a shame, for you and for us.

Step 3: Connect to wifi

  1. After startup, you will see a WiFi network appear: bitaxe-XXXXXX.
  2. Connect to this via your phone or laptop.
  3. Go to the IP address that appears in your browser (usually: 192.168.4.1).
  4. Add your own wifi network there including password.
  5. The Bitaxe now connects to your network and can be reached through a new IP address.

Step 4: Enter Polish and settings

Once you are connected to your own network:

  1. Open the Bitaxe's IP address in your browser.
  2. Plug your Bitaxe into the mains and wait for it to fully boot up.
  3. Open your favorite browser and type in the IP address that appears on the Bitaxe's display.
  4. Click on the top left Settings.
  5. Enter your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password there, so your Bitaxe can connect to your network.
  6. At Stratum-URL enter:
    a. pool.noderunners.network and at Stratum gate: 1337 (link)
    b. pool.satoshiradio.com and at Stratum gate: 3333 (link)
  7. Under Stratum user enter the Bitcoin address where your rewards should go. Want a separate worker name? Then add a period after your bitcoin address, followed by your chosen name (for example 1BitcoinAddr.worker01).
  8. Save the settings and give your Bitaxe a restart. Done!

Within seconds you will see if the Bitaxe is mining correctly. You can see this on the display and through the web interface.

You have now finished installing your Bitaxe!

Step 5: Monitoring and fine-tuning

Through its screen, the Bitaxe shows the status in real time.
You can:

  • Hashrate reading
  • Temperature check
  • See error messages (if any)
  • Reading logs via the web interface

Feel free to play with settings such as frequency or fan speed, but do so in small increments. That way you'll avoid overloading.

🧠 Tip: Bitaxe firmware update

Bitaxe's firmware is under active development. So make sure you are always up-to-date.

🧯 Frequently Asked Questions When Installing Your Bitaxe Gamma

Installing a Bitaxe can sometimes have some snags. That's why we list the most common questions and answers here, so you can get started mining Bitcoin quickly.

1. Can I use a BTC wallet from an exchange?

You can technically enter an exchange address, but we strongly advise against it. Many exchanges do not support mining payments or do not always properly recognize incoming transactions. Rather, use your own non-custodial wallet (hardware or software wallet) in which you manage the private keys yourself.

2. How do I find the IP address of my Bitaxe Gamma?

  1. Look at your Bitaxe's display at startup: the IP address appears on the screen.

  2. Log into your router and under "DHCP leases" or "connected devices" look for a new device.

  3. Use a network scanner (e.g., the Fing app) to scan the LAN.

3. What are the default login credentials for the web interface?

  • User: admin

  • Password: bitaxe123

Tip: change it immediately after your first login to ensure simple security.

4. Does the Bitaxe Gamma work on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?

No, the Gamma only supports 2.4 GHz networks. Make sure your router is set up for that.

5. Which Stratum URL and port should I enter?

  • Stratum URL: pool.noderunners.network

  • Port: 1337

  • Stratum-user: your Bitcoin address. Want to add a worker name? Then put a period after your address, followed by the name (e.g.. 1AbcDefGhij.worker01).

6. How do I update the firmware of my Bitaxe Gamma?

  1. In the web interface, go to Settings → Firmware update.
    Bitaxe Gamma Firmware Update

  2. Alternatively, you can flash your device via this page.

7. My Bitaxe is getting very hot - now what?

  • Don't put it in a closed cabinet.

  • Keep at least 5 cm of free space around the device.

  • Consider an extra fan or work in a room below 30°C.

8. How do I add my own worker name?

Fill in at Stratum-user in:

yourBitcoinAdress.Fill-in-here-your-worker-name-in

Eg. 1XyZabc123.Worker name.

9. How much power does the Bitaxe Gamma consume?

Approximately 20-25 W at full load. Use a 5 V/5 A power supply (min. 25 W) for stable operation.

10. What to do in case of connection problems with the pole?

  • Make sure your Wi-Fi data is correct (SSID + password).

  • Check that the Stratum URL and port are entered exactly.

  • Make sure your router is set to 2.4 GHz.

11. What is the difference between solo mining and pool mining?

  • Solo mining with your Bitaxe Gamma

    • Your Gamma independently searches for a block and upon success claims the full block reward (currently 3.25 BTC) plus all transaction fees.

    • Every ~10 minutes (on average) you have a new chance to find a block, however small that chance is due to the high hashrate of the overall network.

    • You thereby contribute directly to the decentralization of Bitcoin and keep any rewards entirely for yourself.

  • Pool mining

    • You connect your Gamma to a common pool (such as pool.noderunners.network) in which many miners work together.

    • If the pool finds a block, the reward is distributed fairly based on your delivered hashrate.

    • This produces more frequent, smaller payouts.

Our advice: opt for solo mining If you want to actively contribute to decentralization with your Bitaxe Gamma and don't mind irregular (but potentially higher) payouts. Do you prefer a more predictable income? Then pool mining a good choice.

🎯 Conclusion

With this guide, your Bitaxe in ready to make its first hashes. Remember that in doing so, you become part of something bigger: a global movement of open-source Bitcoin innovation. Good luck building and mining!
